The West Coast Kayak Challenge is an idea inspired by the memory of my late and great friend; Andrew Edwards.

In March of 2011 I will paddle a sea kayak from my home town of Largs, on the Firth of Clyde, up through most of the West Coast of Scotland to Stornoway(Steòrnabhagh) on the Isle of Lewis, where Andy was from.

The idea for the West Coast Kayak Challenge came following a visit to Andy’s Mum and Brother in Stornoway. I thought it would be a big challenge to do a journey to Stornoway by sea kayak and one that could be used for helping others.

My family is originally from Largs so this felt like a fitting place to start. Andy’s mum now lives here too, making it all the more fitting.

And its easy, I only have to walk out my front door and down to the shore.

The important thing about the challenge is; as hard as it may be, it will not be as challenging as facing cancer.

1 in 3 of us will face cancer in our lives.

This challenge, all 313 miles of it; is for all of us, all our family and all our friends.

Read on about those that inspired the trip.
